It is named after the acronym for coronavirus disease 2019. The WHO was responsible for announcing on 11 February 2020 that the name of the disease would be COVID-19.

The virus responsible for this disease is called SARS-CoV-2, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2.

The test that detects the presence of genetic material related to SARS-CoV-2 is called PCR.

It is a test that replicates the genome of the virus using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), which detects fragments of the genetic material of a pathogen.

PCR can detect the coronavirus early in the first days of the infectious process, without depending on whether symptoms are absent or will not develop, as can happen in asymptomatic people.

In order to carry out this test, a sample of the nasal portion of the pharynx – nasopharyngeal swab – must be collected and analysed in a laboratory.

The PCR test detects the genetic material of the virus and is positive in the first phase of the disease: from the beginning of incubation until symptoms disappear.

If the PCR result is negative, there are two scenarios: on the one hand, it is possible that you have not been infected and on the other hand that you have already overcome it.

If the latter is the case, an antibody test is recommended to confirm the scenario in which we find ourselves.

rapid antibody test would be sufficient.

From Iberitest we recommend waiting approximately 14 to 16 days before taking a PCR test again, as anticipating these deadlines may cause the result to be positive again.

The PCR tests that we perform at Iberitest have a 99.9% reliability rate. In our laboratory we detect 3 specific regions of the viral RNA: ORF1 ab, Protein S (Spike) and Protein N (Nucleocapsid).

Other laboratories only detect 1 or 2 regions of the viral RNA in order to reduce time and save costs, but their results are much less reliable.

The results of our PCR tests are ready in approximately 24 hours.

There are other Urgent PCR services in which results are available in 5 hours and 2 hours depending on the urgency.

The results within the indicated time may vary depending on the workload, the volume of tests and for reasons external to Iberitest.

While a PCR test detects the presence of the virus in the body, antibody tests do not.

The antibody test is responsible for detecting the presence of antibodies in the body that the body itself generates in order to fight the coronavirus.

It is proof that the disease has already passed through our body and that we have been infected.

Our diagnostic tests have a sensitivity of around 97.73%, a specificity of 99.51% and an accuracy of 98.8%, which vary slightly depending on viral load, contact time and symptomatology.

It is possible to attend the clinic directly without an appointment, but in order to maintain and comply with the health and safety protocols required by the Ministry of Health, we recommend that everyone book through our website in order to control the capacity and avoid possible crowds both inside the clinic and in the street.

If you go without an appointment, it is very likely that you will have to queue and wait as long as there are people with appointments.

The results of your test will be sent to the email address that you provide when you make your booking.

The results will never be given to you by telephone as this is strictly confidential information.

We comply with all the requirements of the Organic Law on Personal Data Protection and guarantee of digital rights.

Travel requirements differ depending on the country you are travelling to. Generally, a PCR test with a negative result within 48/72 hours prior to arrival is required.

The accreditation document we provide meets all the requirements requested for travel of PCR tests (RT-PCR of COVID-19).

An original document will be provided in both SPANISH and ENGLISH, in electronic format (PDF) showing: name, ID card/passport provided, date and time of the report, date and time of the extraction, details of the centre where the analysis was carried out and signed by a medical practitioner.

We recommend consulting the information with the published requirements of the country’s authorities at all times to avoid errors when selecting the reservation.
